The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) has launched unscheduled inspections at the state-owned “Sense Bank”. The decision was made after the bankʼs financial monitoring missed the payment of a UAH 150 million deposit for former Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko.

This was written on the NBU Facebook page.

The National Bank wants to find out whether the bankʼs management gave instructions to its employees, as well as whether they complied with the requirements of the financial monitoring legislation during the financial transactions. The National Bank added that it is premature to draw conclusions about whether there were violations in the bankʼs financial monitoring.

NBU also emphasized that they are not the owners of the state-owned Sense Bank. Its shareholder is the government.

Yesterday, the Ministry of Finance was instructed to accelerate the sale of Sense Bank. The proceeds from the sale will go to finance the needs of the Defense Forces.

Operation “Forrest Gump”

On August 19, NABU and SAPO reported that they had uncovered a criminal scheme that organized the legalization of UAH 150 million to pay bail for one of the defendants in the “Midas” case — likely former Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko.

According to the investigation, in early June, the participants in the scheme gained actual control over “Sense Bank” and began using it to launder money. They were informed of suspicion under Part 3 of Article 209 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — legalization of money obtained by criminal means. Among the defendants in the case are the former heads of the supervisory board and management board of “Sense Bank” Mykola Hladyshenko and Oleksiy Stupak.

The head office of “Sense Bank” was searched on August 19, and on the evening of the same day, the government suspended the chairman of “Sense Bank” supervisory board and initiated the removal of the chairman of the board.
