The BBC Russian Service, the Russian media outlet Mediazona, and volunteers have identified the names of 226 055 Russians killed in the war in Ukraine, and the total number may reach half a million.

Among them are more than 200 servicemen who were only 18 years old. In particular, it was established that on May 1, 2026, 18-year-old Alisher Svirin, who grew up in the Moscow region and went to fight under a contract, died in the war. Thus, he became the first deceased serviceman born in 2008 on the name list compiled by the BBC and Mediazona.

In total, 6 084 military personnel have been confirmed dead in the war in Ukraine in the Moscow region. However, residents of Tyva, Buryatia, and the Altai Republic are dying 20-30 times more often than Moscow residents. In particular, Bashkortostan is in first place — 10 000 residents of the region were killed in the war in Ukraine. Tatarstan is in second place, where 8 759 servicemen died.

In the past two weeks, this list has been expanded by 2 500 names — most of them those who had been missing since 2024. In these cases, the deaths were confirmed either through the courts or upon the discovery of a body.

However, according to journalists and volunteers, the total number of Russians killed in the war could range from 371 080 to 528 148 soldiers. And this does not include fighters from the so-called "LDPR" and mercenaries from the DPRK.

Journalists base their statistics on names and photos from burials published online, information from district or regional authorities, and local media.

  • According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russia lost 1.3 million soldiers killed and wounded in the war against Ukraine. In the last 24 hours alone, Russian losses amounted to 1 300 people.
  • Ukraine last updated its casualty statistics on February 4, 2026: according to President Volodymyr Zelensky, 55 000 Ukrainian soldiers were killed.
