The Romanian Ministry of Defense stated that during Russiaʼs attack on Ukraine on the night of August 20, a drone crashed in the countryʼs territory.
This is stated in the departmentʼs statement.
At around 02:23, Romanian radars detected a group of air targets near the border with Ukraine, in the north of Tulcea County.
Two Spanish F-18s were launched, as well as a Romanian IAR-330 SOCAT helicopter, to monitor the situation.
At 03:21, the drone flew into Romanian airspace and three minutes later crashed 4 km from the city of Grindu, in a deserted area. A fire broke out after that, but it extinguished itself.
According to the Ministry of Defense, there were no injuries. The military has arrived at the scene.
This night, Russia attacked a checkpoint on the border with Moldova in the Odessa region with drones, President Volodymyr Zelensky said. No casualties were reported.
- This is not the first time that UAVs or their debris have crashed in Romania. One such drone crashed and exploded on August 8 on the border between Romania and Bulgaria.
