The chairman of the Danish parliamentary Defense Committee Rasmus Jarlov ridiculed former US President Donald Trumpʼs statements about buying Greenland.

He wrote about this on his page on the social network X.

"Not that we are completely satisfied, but the current growth rate in Denmark is quite decent. Soon we will start buying US states," wrote X Yarlov on social media.

He later added that he had always admired New Hampshire and had even expressed interest in Hawaii. He said that the Hawaiians should decide for themselves whether to join Denmark, because the United States "couldnʼt develop a state with its large debts".

Greenland and the USA

In December 2024, Donald Trump declared that “possession and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity” for US national security. He had said he was interested in purchasing the island during his first term as president. He has since reiterated his desire to acquire the island.

Following Trumpʼs statement, Denmark decided to significantly increase defense spending on the island and also changed the royal coat of arms to make it more prominently represent Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

Polls show that almost 85% of Greenlanders are against its secession from the Kingdom of Denmark and joining the United States. In March 2025, parliamentary elections were held in Greenland, won by the center-right “Demokraatit party” — it supports the islandʼs independence.

In November, the Greenlandic parliament passed a law restricting foreigners from buying property on the island, amid growing US interest in purchasing property in Greenland.

That same month, the Danish Foreign Ministry said it had launched a “night watch” to monitor President Donald Trump’s statements and actions while Copenhagen slept.
