Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova confirmed that Montenegro, northern Macedonia and Bulgaria had closed the skies to the plane of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. On June 6, he was scheduled to fly to Serbia for two days.

"EU and NATO member states have closed the airspace, closed the next communication channel," Zakharova said on Italian TV channel La7.

Instead, Russia invited the Serbian Foreign Minister to visit Moscow.

  • Serbia remains the only candidate country for the European Union that has not imposed sanctions on Russia.
  • At the same time, she voted three times in the UN for resolutions condemning Russian aggression and maintaining Ukraineʼs territorial integrity.
