The United States has imposed a 50% tariff on some goods from Canada after trade talks broke down.

Reuters writes about this.

These are tariffs on goods worth a total of about $20 billion — about 5% of all US imports from Canada in 2025.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he had decided to halt the talks and ordered his negotiators to return to Ottawa. Canada also said it would impose similar tariffs on the United States.

President Donald Trumpʼs administration claims the deal fell apart because Canada wanted additional concessions, including on steel, aluminum and automobiles.

On August 19, Trump suspended the imposition of 50% tariffs on goods from Canada for three days. At the time, he said that the US and Canada had reached an agreement, but the documents still had to be finalized.

What preceded

Trump announced on April 2, 2025, that he would impose tariffs on goods from other countries. The new tariffs affected more than 180 countries and territories (not including Russia, North Korea, Cuba, and Belarus, which are already under sanctions). Certain products from Canada had a 25% tariff. They were later increased to 35%.

In February, the US Supreme Court ruled that most of Trumpʼs tariffs were illegal. Trump himself called the courtʼs decision "disgraceful" and reported that he would impose new tariffs on all imports under the Trade Act of 1974.
