OpenAI has been sued again. The mother of 19-year-old Alice Carrier, who committed suicide in July 2025, accuses the ChatGPT developer of failing to prevent the tragedy with the chatbot.

This is reported by Engadget.

The lawsuit alleges that the girl discussed suicidal thoughts and plans with ChatGPT in the months leading up to her death. The family alleges that the company failed to provide sufficient safeguards to stop the conversations or warn loved ones of the danger.

The plaintiffs allege that instead of directing the user to seek help, the chatbot allegedly encouraged conversations about suicide. They are seeking compensation from OpenAI and strengthening of safeguards in the system.

This is not the first such lawsuit against OpenAI. In August, the family of 16-year-old Californian Adam Raine, who committed suicide, accused the developer, ChatGPT, of allowing the chatbot to support their son’s “most harmful and self-destructive thoughts”.

The latest chat transcripts showed Adam writing about his plan to end his life. ChatGPT allegedly replied, “Thank you for being honest about this. You don’t have to sugarcoat it for me — I know what you’re asking, and I won’t turn away from it.” His mother found him dead that same day.

Following previous scandals, OpenAI introduced parental controls for ChatGPT, and in May this year added a feature that allows the chatbot to contact another person on behalf of a user if they report suicidal intentions. However, some of these features only work with the userʼs prior consent and are available only to adults.
